If there’s one thing about national restaurant chains, it’s that they are always looking for innovative food options to entice patrons to visit their restaurants. However, sometimes those ideas can backfire, and that is exactly what happened with the Bacon Cheeseburger Wonton Taco — at least in my opinion.
But before I get into the specifics of the taco, I want to give a special thanks to the Creve Coeur location for the great hospitality. They were very accommodating during my tasting and made the overall experience a pleasant one.
Now, to the taco.
My Thoughts
I picked it up, and at first glance, it appeared to look just like the ones you would find at Taco Bell or Del Taco. It features seasoned ground beef sautéed with onions and cheddar cheese, topped with Applewood-smoked bacon, pickles and spicy honey mustard.
I then confirmed with the restaurant that there was no lettuce, as I wanted no part of the massive stomach bug that is sweeping the nation. They assured me there wasn’t, and it was then time for me to give it a try.

I took my first bite, and instantly, I knew it wasn’t for me. In fact, it was so unappetizing that I went straight for the new Blue Margarita that had been released by the chain to help remove the horrible taste from my mouth.
As far as what went wrong, for me, it began with the sauce. I didn’t feel that honey mustard was a good addition to a taco. I also felt that having the cheese melted would have helped.
However, I will note that my guest, who accompanied me to the restaurant, really liked it and even took some home to have later.
As for me, I was able to find another item on the menu to salvage my Applebee’s outing, and I want to give a shoutout to the relatively new Lemon Parmesan Chicken.

The dish comes with a hearty, well-portioned chicken breast that sits on a bed of mashed potatoes and is served with a side of broccoli or, in this case, green beans.
While I was initially skeptical that the chicken would be dry, Applebee’s completely knocked it out of the park with this new menu option.
Not only was the chicken juicy and flavorful, but the sauce had just the right amount of flavor, so the lemon taste wasn’t too overwhelming. Additionally, I’ve always been a fan of Applebee’s mashed potatoes, and they lived up to the standard that I’ve begun to expect.
So, if you’re headed to Applebee’s, I strongly encourage you to grab the Lemon Parmesan Chicken. But if you want to give the tacos a try, you will likely find yourself either liking them or hating them.
As for me, I found Applebee’s to miss the mark with its latest creation. That was definitely not eating good in the neighborhood.
